Principles for Navigating Challenging Conversations

For CATA workshops – and the “real world”

  1. Turn off your cellphones.
    Be fully present.
  2. Listen carefully. Listen for understanding. Be curious!
  3. Ask clarifying questions.
  4. Treat others with respect. Challenge ideas, not people.
  5. Monitor your verbal and nonverbal communication.
  6. Be respectful, but don’t be afraid to say what you think.
  7. Name and celebrate points of agreement.
  8. If you usually have a lot to offer, step back and make space for others. If you normally hesitate to offer your opinion, step up and share your thoughts.
  9. Stick to the topic at hand.
  10. Maintain confidentiality – during and after the discussion.
  11. Speak from your own experience. Avoid generalizing, or placing blame.
  12. Assume the positive intentions of others.
